A Boston Red Sox jersey buried in the New York Yankees new stadium by a Red Sox fan is selling for over $70,000 on eBay. The Red Sox fan who worked on the stadium buried the David Ortiz jersey in concrete, hoping to place a curse on the Yankees. The Yankees spent $30,000 digging it up. Proceeds from the auction on eBay for the jersey will benefit the Jimmy Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The auction closes April 24th.

The eBay boycott planned for May 1st is now global. The planned boycott to protest fee and policy changes is now generating worldwide attention – with sellers in many countries pledging to boycott eBay. The two biggest complaints remain that eBay will no longer allow negative buyer feedback and the increase in sales charges from 5.25 to 7.25 percent.

A Romanian hacker known as Vladuz has been arrested. According to media reports, 20-year-old Vlad Constantin Duiculescu, 20, was arrested in a communist-era housing project in Bucharest. Vladuz earned attention after acquiring credentials allowing him to access employee-only sections eBay. He then masqueraded as an eBay official in user forums. Although he never proved it, Vladuz claimed to be able to gain full access to restricted parts of eBay. He was arrested by Romanian law enforcement officials with the help of the US Secret Service, the FBI and eBay's global fraud investigation team. eBay has pegged the total amount of damage caused by Vladuz at $1 million.

The Financial Times reports that eBay will consider selling its Skype unit at the end of the year if it cannot find ways to make the Internet phone service aid its main online auction business.

In an effort to protect eBay users from fraud, eBay will start noting which computers members use to conduct their buying and selling activity. The reason is one way criminals defraud people is by gaining access to well-established accounts and then set up listings in that person’s name. Sometime in June, eBay will try to ensure sellers are logging in from the same machines they have successfully used previously. For example, if you attempt to list an item from a different computer – such as a PC you are borrowing in a hotel– eBay will call the phone number you have registered with the company to confirm you are really posting the listing. eBay may also verify your identity in other ways. Initially, this process will only apply to selling, although the company says it may extend it to other activity in the future.
