What is a Podcast?

The word “Podcast” was derived from combining the words "iPod" and "Broadcast" and it simply means "on demand viewing" of audio or video content on a computer. Podcasts can also be downloaded to an mp3 player, such as an iPod, to a cell phone or to any other type of portable device.

How Does a Podcast Work? In order for a podcast to be available to the public, a podcaster, the host or author of the podcast, must submit their content to a hosting site or podcast directory, such as iTunes. Once a podcast has been submitted to a hosting site it can be listened to by anyone with an internet connection, anywhere in the world, anytime, usually for free.

Subscribing to a Podcast

Listeners choose their podcasts by visiting a podcast directory site and subscribing to podcasts within the directory. A podcast subscription delivers each new episode of the podcast automatically to the listener's computer.

To better understand the concept of subscribing to a podcast, think of it as a years subscription to a magazine; the magazine subscription is the same as subscribing to a podcast and each new podcast episode is the equivalent of the magazine that arrives automatically each month.

The Good News about Podcast Subscriptions

Podcast subscriptions make getting podcasts super simple! Once a listener has a subscription they never have to spend time looking for new episodes of their favorite podcasts. The podcast is always there and always up-to-date whenever they want it. Thus, podcast subscriptions are great for advertisers too! A podcast subscription guarantees that the ads on each and every episode will be delivered to the listener's computer; always there and always up-to-date, just waiting to be listened to.
